Week 15: Apple

Today we had another doctor's visit. It's week 15, and little one is the size of an apple.

When we arrived there had been a clerical error. They were not expecting us until the 25th. Somehow when the appointment was made, the secretary heard twenty-fifth, rather than twenty (day) fifth (month). But they told us not to worry that they would work us in. So about an hour and half after our scheduled appointment (this is a fairly typical time to wait to see the doctor) they brought us back to the doctor's office. Today, we were suppose to get the results of the genetic sonogram screening. This screening is used for early detection of genetic disorders such as Down's Syndrome and Trisomy. Our results showed that we have a reduced risk of both. There is a 1:9,600 chance of Down's Syndrome and a 1:10,000 chance of Trisomy.

The doctor thought she might be able to tell us if little one is a boy or girl. But S/he was not very cooperative, and the doctor said she just could not be sure. "The secret remains," she said.

We go back to our doctor here one more time at our 2oth week for an evaluation, just days before we get on a plane headed back to the States on June 30.

A little wave

After the visit to the hospital yesterday, we could not get in touch with our doctor. So, this morning we got up and went to her office. She was not working today, but another doctor was, and she agreed to see us.

She did an exam and confirmed what the doctors in the ER had told us. Everything looked OK. I just need to rest for about a week or so.

While performing the sonogram we saw little one waving at us. The doctor said that little one was saying, "hi mommy and daddy." That made our day.

A scary night

This morning at 3am we got a scare when I started bleeding. We called our friends, and they met us at the maternity ER. Thankfully, the ultrasound showed no problems, and little one was active as ever, and his heart was beating strongly. I have been commanded to do no work including cooking, cleaning, etc. for a week (poor B). We are still trying to get an appointment with our doctor to get her opinion, but everything seems OK for the moment.

Today marks 14 weeks for little one. S/he is the size of a lemon. And s/he can suck her/his thumb.

Another Check Up

Today I went in for a check up to have the doctor read the results of the sonogram from last week. She said that everything was normal! Also we saw the baby through another sonogram, but we were not given any of the pictures to take home this time. S/he was moving around like crazy! The last two sonograms have been done with gel on my tummy. I have heard people complain about how uncomfortable this is but, it didn't bother me at all.

I also had my finger pricked to have blood work done for more genetic testing. The results for this should take about 10 days once the lab receives them. So, my next appointment to see the doctor is May 20th.

They guy who gave me a finger prick was funny. After not being able to get two different finger prick machines to work, he just took a needle and did it the old fashion way. Surprisingly, it hurt less that way than with a machine!
